Original Webcomic
TRIGGER WARNINGS: A mention of suicide, blood, body horror
"Bongcheon-Dong Ghost" is a webcomic from the early 2010s, famous for including animated jumpscares in the middle of the comic. Unfortunately, these jumpscares no longer work on the original site seemingly due to flash going down. While the experience isn't the same, you can still view these jumpscares in youtube videos like this one.
I have a distinct memory of trying to read this comic back sometime between 2012 and 2014, sitting on my grandparents' chair just after the sun had started to set. I'd already known about the comic and had tried before to read it (and was very unsuccessful) - the first jumpscare still got me though, and I still wasn't able to finish it. I wish I had tried to go back and read it one last time before flash went down. I think this is an example of a jumpscare that's actually done incredibly well, and also one in which knowing about it makes it even more effective. The krrk sound the ghost's neck makes when she whips around is burned into my mind forever, and I mean that in a good way.
